Why You Should Try Nature Photography

Now, we may be a little bit bias, but we think that everyone should attempt to give nature photography a try! Not convinced? Checkout our Instagram, Facebook and Twitter pages and read our testimonials from students and teachers who have taken part in Focus on Nature workshops. Keep reading to find out why nature photography should be on your bucket list!

First of all, nature is all around us and most of us have a device of some sort that allows us to take photos. You do not have to be a professional photographer or have high end photography equipment to head on a walk around your neighbourhood and capture some photos of elements you find intriguing. If you do not have any nature elements that jump out at you right away, consider using what we call SCUFI, which means shoot close up for impact. Perhaps you are walking along your street and see a tree. You do not find the tree to be inherently interesting or photo worthy. But, do not fret! Using SCUFI, you can take a close up picture of the tree’s bark to make a more interesting shot!

Next, let’s look at this scenario. You are at a large shopping mall, and it is very busy with scrambling shoppers all over the place who are trying to complete their holiday shopping. It is almost as though you cannot move without bumping into someone. This situation sounds very high stress! Although you did not finish your shopping, the next day you decide to go for a walk on the hiking trails instead of the mall. As you walk, you are calmed by the natural sounds of the trails; the leaves crunching under your feet, the birds chirping and the sounds of the other little animals scurrying in the forest in preparation for the winter. You feel much more relaxed and calm in this environment!

Finally, nature photography is something that can be done by yourself, with a friend or two, or even an entire classroom of students! During our workshops we see students showing off their photographs to their classmates and building new connections and bonds with one another. See the photos below of some of our students bonding and sharing the awesomeness of nature photography.

Nature photography and nature interaction are at the heart of Focus on Nature. We encourage all people to explore their environment and capture the beauty that it holds!
