Waterloo Region Media Release

WATERLOO, ON – Focus on Nature, a local charity, provided more children in the Waterloo Region with a fun day of nature photography than ever before thanks to a $7,200 grant provided by the Kitchener Waterloo Community Foundation with funds from the Weiland Family Foundation and the Ontario Endowment for Children and Youth in Recreation. With this funding, Focus on Nature was able to waive fees for 20 workshops at low-income area schools, expanding its reach to an impressive 1,431 Waterloo Region students this spring!

Focus on Nature’s mission is to enhance young people’s love of nature as the first step towards environmental stewardship. Their full-day workshop, aligned with the Ontario Arts Curriculum, provides each student with a camera, challenging them to be nature explorers in their neighborhood. Highland PS teacher Kim Broucke had this to say after participating with her class: “My students love the program. It was wonderful to see them so engaged and looking closely at the world around them. We’d love to book again next year!”

As a volunteer-driven registered charity, Focus on Nature currently operates in multiple regions across southern Ontario and has extended the program’s reach in these areas thanks to the support it receives through grants and individual donations.
