Grades 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8

Strand B - Life Systems - B

Students examine various animals and plants and their importance to society and the environment. Students will also talk about interactions in the environment as well as growth and changes in plants, habitats and communities, and some biodiversity(Elements of Design Slideshow and nature photo walk)

Earth and Space Systems - E

Students will learn about daily and seasonal changes as well as air and water in the environment (nature photo walk)

Grade 9

A2.4 apply scientific literacy skills when investigating social and environmental issues that have personal, local, and/or global impacts

Students can connect to photos that may capture the impacts of climate change, they can also use context clues within photos that may outline various cultural/personal impacts of climate change. Students may also be able to identify evidence of environmental/ecological impacts within their photos i.e. squiggly lines on a log indicate evidence of Emerald Ash Borer an invasive species that is harming forests in Ontario.

B2.5 explain the effects of various human activities on the dynamic equilibrium of ecosystems

Photos taken by students may capture the effects of human activities on ecosystems such as walking trails impacting forest ecosystems where native plants struggle to grow alongside/on top of trails.

Grade 10

D3.5 describe the principal sources and sinks, both natural and/or anthropogenic, of greenhouse gases (e.g., carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, halocarbons, water vapour)

Students can discuss the roles of urban green spaces such as woodlots in acting as a carbon sink. Urban green spaces are also important in reducing pollution and the urban heat island effect.
